Developing Emotional Intelligence
There are two parts that you have to work on to develop emotional intelligence. One is internal where you manage your own emotions and reactions. The other track is where you get more detailed with specifics that take into account various other group dynamics. The tips in this Chapter are applicable even to leadership positions of a personal nature (head of the family, captain of the softball team, president of the homemakers’ club, etc.).
Developing emotional intelligence requires you to work on two areas: Personal competence and Social competence. This framework is presented by author Travis Bradberry in his book Emotional Intelligence 2.0. This Chapter follows these tracks in giving you specific action steps to take in order to be a master of your emotions and become a brilliant leader.
Basic Formula for Controlling Your Emotions
Going back to the basic premise that it is the amygdala hijacking the neocortex that causes your emotions to go haywire, controlling your emotions can be achieved following this formula:
Calm down – it takes the brain 20 minutes to recover from an emotional trigger. If you keep your internal dialogue running, several other triggers could be activated and this period could stretch indefinitely. The snowball of emotional encounters will prevent you from moving on.
